Graphic Artists' Guild (GAG)

"What are the opinions out there on belonging to the guild?
Denise"

I've been a member of the graphic Artists Guild since 1977, and a Hotline volunteer since 1984. It's the very best organization we have available to us as professional artists. The Guild is at the forefront for protecting our interests, educating ourselves about our rights and responsibilities, and networking with other graphics professionals. Check out the website at www.gag.org -- see for yourself! If you have some specific questions, ask away--

Have a great day, all--
Peace & joy,
Claudia

The Graphic Artists Guild is launching a new, FREE service to confront eroding industry standards. The "Contract Monitor" is an email publication to help you protect yourself in today's changing climate.

The Monitor will tell you who to look out for -- and which contract requires special attention. It will tell you what those contracts really mean, and why those issues matter to you and your business.

Specifically, the Monitor will alert you to the potential dangers of contracts currently offered by publishers, ad agencies and other clients. It will keep you abreast of the latest trends so you can make informed decisions about your livelihood and the state of the industry. We'll also tell you about favorable contracts, when we become aware of them.

Anyone can subscribe to this email newsletter for free. Simply reply to me at:

pbasista@nac.net

and I'll add you to the subscription list. If you know someone who'd like to subscribe but is not computer capable, please have them send a pre-addressed, stamped envelope (78 cents), and we'll mail a hardcopy to them.

I'd also like you help us keep this service up to date by sending us your contracts for analysis. Send us the good, the bad and the ugly. Of course, all submissions will remain confidential. Your fellow artists need to know.

Thanks for your continued support.

Sincerely
Paul Basista

Subscriptions to the Contract Monitor are free to anyone who wants them, member or not. Access to indexed, archived articles will be available only to members.

The Contract Monitor is an electronic newsletter that is available for free to anyone who desires it (Guild membership is desirable, but not required). The first three issues have analyzed a number of boilerplate contracts - the good, the bad and the ugly - and suggests what your negotiating objectives should be.

We always give a company advance warning before we publish, and give them an opportunity to modify their terms -- with some success.

To subscribe:

email to: Commands@GAG.org

in the body of the message type: subscribe ContractMonitor

That's all there is to it. A listserve company will deliver the next issue, scheduled in February. If you want to see the first three, you can see a summary on our website http://gag.org, or email me and I'll forward them to you.

Thanks for your interest. The CM is a great tool to change and improve industry standards. We have nearly 1000 subscribers in just a few short months.
