Author/illustrator of books for children and young adults, editorial, and fine arts. Works in mixed media and specialises in children's themes.

Debbie started out as a musician working in a library, who, at 23 years old, fell in love with picture books. Since then, though mostly self-taught, she has attended Columbus (OH) College of Art and Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Philadelphia College of the Arts. She has a Masters Degree in Library Services to Children and Young Adults from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA.

A member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) since 1987, she currently is serving as the Illustrator Coordinator on the SCBWI-Michigan Advisory Committee. She works as the Youth Services Specialist for the Grand Rapids Public Library. In February, 1999, she was appointed to the American Library Association's 2000 Caldecott Committee (that gives an award for the most distinguished picture book published in 1999).

Creative pursuits and books have helped her heal and she wishes to inspire the creative and reading interests of youth and others through her work as a librarian and artist and to work to ensure that quality books are available to enrich, entertain, and enlighten others.
